Thanks to all the contributors to help start the Sakthi Montessori school for the underprivileged children in a southern Indian village called Sendurai, Madurai (Dindugal) District, Tamil Nadu, India.
Land was procured for the school in 2007. But due to insufficient funds to construct own building, we have started in a rental place in December 2007. Please see the photos. We plan to start construct own building in 2008.

A DAY IN OUR MONTESSORI HOUSE OF
CHILDREN
1. Morning 8.30 – 9 am. Teachers open the school and start welcoming the
children.
2. Children bring flowers and offer to the Almighty everyday.
3. Teachers and children settle for the morning prayers. We have our own
chants from ancient scriptures in Tamil
and Sanskrit languages. The chants are positive statements and
are chanted loudly to bring positive vibrations
to oneself and the environment.
4. The sacred traditional lamp is lighted as a symbol of knowledge . It is
light that illuminates everything which
otherwise would be dark (Ignorance).
5. After the chants, we are practicing deep breathing exercise and simple
muscular activities to warm up our body.
Good blood flow makes the brain active for excellent receptiveness and
learning.
6. We meditate for a minute, by remaining silent and observe the breath and
thoughts. We do the ‘’Shanthi mantra’’
[chants for inner and outer peace]. Then we look at Dr. Montessori and
Ms.Rukminidevi Arundael ‘s photo and
thank them. After this, we salute our nation flag.
7. Children choose their essential practical life activities [ EPL].
8. New presentation will be given based on the day, weekly and monthly
plans.
9. Individual plans for the children will be carried out based on the daily
need.
10. From 9.20 to 11. 20 am this activity happens. After 10 minutes break,
the school begins the English and Tamil
language program.
11. 12 pm , the children are involved in physical education.
12. 12.30pm, parents take back the children.
13. Before leaving again children pray for peace and leave the school.
14. The teachers write every day report on every child’s activities of the
day.
15. Teachers check the environment and prepare for the next day work with a
helper.
16. The teachers also record the daily observation, accounts, attendance,
regularly.
17. We restrict junk food for snacks. We give only fresh fruits and nuts
and cooked pulses and legumes.
18. The school demands the parents to see their children’s work on every
Monday. Every day the exercises done
by the children are recorded in individual note books in local language
(Tamil).
19. Every festival is getting celebrated in the school highlighting the
reason and significance. This imparts the children
our tradition and rich cultural heritage.
20. Every 100th day will the school term ends.
21. All week ends are holidays.
22. Parents will be consulted regularly about the changes they see in their
children after attending school.
23. The school is spreading Dr. Montessori’s ideas, thoughts and methods
through simple writing in Tamil . Every 10 days
will hold one such Montessori saying in the school hall.
24. Every Friday art and craft classes are carried out.
25. Music and drama are also part of the classes helping the children to
express their emotions, ideas and talents..
26. Every movement in a Montessori environment is a lesson. So we are aware
about each activity.
27. We are planning to introduce short audio- video learning sessions,
outdoor field trips in near future.
28. We make sure that Children are enjoying the school.
