Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) ranks the Quality of Indian Education

It was shocking to see India rank at the 73rd position among 75 participating countries in the 2012 test conducted by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) recently.

The Education Department of India decided that about 16,000 children from Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh - the two States considered the best in the country- would take the examination. The results confirmed the worst of what anyone has been saying about the current quality of Indian education. The survey has found that the average 15-year-old Indian is over 200 points behind the global topper.
This is in stark contrast to the view that Indian computer professionals, doctors, engineers, Ph.D.'s are very much in demand, at home and overseas, leaving us with the major question: what do the PISA tests reveal about the state of education in present day India?

This article is not meant to demean anyone; rather, to create an awareness to raise children with creative thinking and social skills; to highlight the important factors responsible for this degradation of quality in education and to offer solutions to improve it.

We Reap What We Sow Indian parents push children to do whatever it takes, even to skip grades, in order to beat the crowd; thereby sprout-2resulting in creating individuals with a let's-get-this-work-done-even-without-understand-it attitude. This unhealthy, competitive spirit of parents pressures children to memorize theory without understanding concepts and also curbs their innate creative abilities, leadership and sense of responsibility in adult life.

In Indian schools, children who memorize and reproduce text in examinations are considered intelligent by parents and their peers. This shows inability to differentiate between intelligence and memorized information on the part of the adults. Since children with memorizing ability are ranked as top students, naturally Indian graduates are mostly hired for their laboring skills. For example, most Indian Ph.D.'s are hired in academic labs, not for their creative talents, but to follow the boss' instructions.

Twitter and Facebook

Computer technologists from India mostly do computer coding - work that requires a lesser intellectual challenge. In spite of the millions of IT professionals in India, we have failed to come up with creative ideas such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Even with thousands of Ph.D.'s, doctors and engineers, India has been unable to get a single Nobel Prize in Science (except Dr. Amartya Sen in Economics) in the past 82 years!Sir C.V. Raman received the Nobel Prize in 1930 for Physics.

It is very clear that India is now producing degree holders without many creative abilities.

Indian Parents in Foreign Countries
Indian children top and win the Spelling Bee competitions in USA, but rarely shine in other competitions because of their parents' emphasis on memorizing facts. Therefore, in US schools, Indian students do well in their early school years, and then their grades start to slip as they reach high school, because the US education system tests not the memory, but an understanding of concepts. Indian parents, without understanding the problem, naturally blame American school teachers for bias in grading.

Preparing for the Future Challenge
Due to the rat race mindset, we are blind to the serious stress symptoms of resource depletion on our planet, in the form of increased natural disasters. We are unable to connect to the Truth that we have converted one form of our natural resource's energy into a material energy of richness and luxury.
Unfortunately, this material wealth is a non-renewable resource; we are therefore increasingly pushing humanity towards the worst ever poverty experienced in history. It is time to create awareness through education and muscle up our creative abilities to meet the forthcoming challenge of ensuring the planet's natural resources for our collective future.

Where did we go wrong?
The standard thinking of current Indian parents is to ensure an education for their child that ensures a well-paid job immediately after leaving college. The well-paid job should buy a car, a house and a life partner and also within a few years produce two children. No wonder, Indian temples are crowded to perform God pleasing rituals to execute this format without any hindrance. This race has not spared falling into the trap of fraud spiritual Gurus whose blessings are sought to get material prosperity in life.
This thinking, however, does nothing to ensure the growth of a child's mind; and when a whole generation of parents thinks this way, a whole generation of children will grow up ill-equipped to think for themselves, or to govern their country or this planet.

Tit for tat: We think that by paying money to private schools we could make our children doctors, engineers and MBA business graduates, without having the Viveka that it will back fire us by fuelling the growth of inefficient money minded professionals in our social life. The covetous private schools nicely milk the parent's wallet and employed teachers who take the paying job without any inspiration to teach.

Natural law reveals that for every action, someone has to sacrifice their energy. Children sacrifice all the fun of their childhood and grow up as book copiers in examination halls. Many schools in India, force children to ignore 11th grade syllabus and focus only on 12th grade to get good marks. Hardly, any parents condemn the school administration that by avoiding 11th syllabus, children will not be able to build a Five corruptionfoundation to understand the 12th grade subjects.

Loss of viveka: Our current schools dampen children's questioning ability in classroom which ends up in loss of Viveka and creativity in life. Ironically this is happening in India, the land of Gynana (viveka) Bhoomi which from ancient times emphasis on the educational system of questioning and contemplating.

We are still able to celebrate our past glory of an age of Viveka that has contributed Ayurveda, Yoga and meditation which now every nook and corner of the world cherishes for maintaining good health. We have the contribution of Zero adding value to the world of mathematics and the concept of Universal Love through the rich philosophical and spiritual traditions.

We were not taught to listen and believe, but question like a fire burning out dark-ignorance. Literary and spiritual scriptures of Bharath encourage asking questions and contemplating on it and find the most logical answers, that will be good for the individual and for the society.

Mechanical Rituals: This performing action without understanding is not only in our educational system but also reflected in our social life and cultural life. We celebrate festivals every year, visit temples often, do weddings and other social rituals without any understanding what it is meant for. We blindly do just because everybody is doing. Hence we lack inner growth, maturity and social responsibility even if we are educated and grow old.

Indian morality is ranking low: Similar to our low-ranking in the international PISA education standard, our social life quality also is ranked very down. India a country that was looked up as a spiritual land is a nation picking up fast with increased divorce rates, immoral sexual relationships and bad health style.

Copying other unhealthy styles: Instead of imitating the good qualities of the westerns, we copy their bad mannerisms. Instead of considering English as a language to communicate in the global world, we made it as an alternative to our own mother tongue. So children growing up speaking only English cannot connect at the root level to the cultural values of Bharath. Losing culture is an irreparable loss, similar to losing the good genetics we have been inheriting for generations, by adopting a bad life-style.

How can we rectify this situation?
Exam pattern: Examination pattern that tests the student's understanding of concepts should be tested and not the memory. Multiple-choice questions based tests should replace the current essay writing methodology. This will increase the demand for knowledgeable teachers in schools. This also eases the burden on children to memorize but focus on grasping concepts.

Through  a well researched effort, we have come up with an Universal Self pattern recognition model that simplifies conceptual learning. Like the five fingers, children learn to recognize the five universal energy patterns and connect to similar patterns in all branches of arts and sciences. Neuroscience correlates neuronal connectivity to intelligence and creativity. All discoveries are done by individuals who recognize patterns that others missed connecting. The Universal Self pattern increases connectivity in children by recognizing patterns.

Why pattern recognition is the efficient method of learning? Understand that for every child, all concepts are intangible to them. Children become slow or fast learners depending upon the way we present the abstract concepts to them and most importantly how we allow them to identify that knowledge practically outside. So far, all global education systems have presented the abstract concept of mathematics to children by showing a pattern of 1 to 10. If the child is taught to look at all numbers as a pattern repeating everywhere, then it self-teaches itself to understand numbers to millions, billions, trillions to infinity.

The Uni5 system has extended such pattern recognition in all branches of knowledge. To make this concept clear, please take zigsaw pattern-fruitthree similar pictures of a fruit basket and cut the first one into 24 equal square pieces and the second picture into 24 Zigzag (jigsaw) puzzle format and third one into 24 random size and shapes. Guess, which set of the puzzle is easy for a child to put together? The child can use the help of patterns in the second set to naturally self-guide itself to fix the pieces successfully.

Our well researched Uni5 method of pattern teaching does a similar job to children to self-connect both the external and internal science that enhances creativity, intelligence and a strong psychological foundation. By looking at the life patterns, a child is self guided to make right choices for making life happy to live.

This system is based on the Truth, discovered by the great men and women of Bharath that ignites "Viveka," the power of discrimination both in children and adults. The Uni5 Pattern will help children to understand the Truth about the personalities and also about the value of Cultural wealth.

We have four Uni5 model schools giving this education that connects concepts to the deepest self in all subjects. In this environment, we encourage a healthy internal competition to evolve to higher levels and not an external competition. Please click here for knowing the details.

Your involvement: Only through a collective effort we can clean up the pitfalls in our education system. A few individuals cannot change this situation quickly. Therefore we request everyone to join hands to help in this non-profit project (globally profitable) to be successfully used in our society to ensure a happy life.
